Cambridge- W. R. Grace |
Dear Mr. Nakagawa:
Thank you for your letter on behalf of the Alewife Study Group, regarding the W. R. Grace
& Co. (W. R. Grace) site at 62 Whittemore Avenue, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Upon receiving your letter, Commissioner Liss requested that DEP's Northeast Regional
Office, which has been involved in this site for the past year, prepare a response specifically
addressing the issues. A memorandum addressing the concerns raised by you and by other
residents of your neighborhood during public meetings at W.R. Grace on June 3 and June 17 is
enclosed with this letter.
DEP is sensitive to the concerns and fears of the neighbors regarding the potential
exposure to contaminants during soil disturbance at the W.R. Grace site and remains open to
respond to any questions about the site. In addition, the Northeast Regional Office has assigned
one of its most senior technical staff to review assessment and response action plans and to
provide technical input to W.R. Grace on its proposed actions at the site. The Department will
also continue to provide compliance and technical assistance to the community groups in
Cambridge as necessary.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call Jack Miano,
at the Bureau of Waste Site Cleanup in the Northeast Regional Office at (978) 661-7734.
Sincerely,
[signed]
William P. Gaughan
Regional Director,
